Design is not just for Designers

November 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I came across a very interesting article on how art generally and design specifically helps in one’s daily life. This goes for people who don’t deal with art on a daily basis too.

A few pointers caught my attention. Enumerating them as follows:

1. Any package, brouchure or website which had some design thoughts on it never comes across as a ‘designed accident’. Even if the content inside does not interest you, the overall design stimulates your brain.

2. Learn to doodle, draw or paint. Learn how to talk when you are producing this art. Helps a lot in whiteboard presentations.

3. Learn to take good photos. Understand what makes one photo better than another one.

4. Watch TED videos related to design and creativity.

5. Take walks alone in the nature or or in your neighbourhood when traffic is not at its peak. Helps not to have your phone with you when you do this.

6. Take walks alone with your phone along (better in the airline mode) and record your thoughts on the way. Put it up online either in your blog or as a “not for public” entry. This could be a seperate blog or a tumblr account.

After all there is design in everything we do. Do we not design strategies or financial projections?

year-ending

2009 might just become a materialistically simpler year in a long long time. I am feeling it. Feeling it

Powerpoint presentations are much cooler with just text boxes

December 2, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Home and have to help out your old parents. It is one way of expressing gratitude – blah blah emo emo emo blah blah

I did trip on Presentation Zen for a long while. Help asked in the form of a Powerpoint presentation was jumped into. I was waiting for such an opportunity to tune up the things I have wanted to try out for – and this time for real. This powerpoint would be seen by people! and not on Slideshare!

This time the machine did not have Office 2007. All experimentation was on Office 2003.

1. No smart graphics. All actions to be done in the “primitive” way.

2. All slides were done on white background and blank layout

3. The entire powerpoint presentation was done using Textboxes only. No bullets, no crazy fonts.

4. Five words in one slide corresponded to five different text boxes. Placed with absoultely no symmetry and certain words with higher fonts. This looks absolutely neat and cool.

The end result – the old people absolutely loved the presentation. Done in absolutely minimal time too. Previous experiences with the backgrounds, word art and layouts were compeltely eliminated.

Inference: Minimal is completely cool. I was scared that my parents would be asking for the usual – “make it look more powerpoint like” and it never happened also.

Extrapolated inference: Its not about more features and buttons – its about the absolutely necessary ones. Zen!
